Christmas Hair Wish

PHOTO: http://santacallsllc.com/

Usually at this time of year, I come out with a product wish list of things I want to try out, this time I wanted to do something a little different.

Among the materialistic things I would love to receive, there is something much more important, I would like for a Hair Wish.

It is for every woman and child with natural afro-textured hair to be proud to rock their curls and love themselves for who they are.

As of late, I’ve been reading sad stories about young girls who have been tormented at school, not only by kids, but by adults who are supposed to have their best interests at heart:

Seven year old, Lamya Cammon, in Milwaukee had her braid cut and put in the garbage by her teacher, because she was playing with her hair. Why this women thought it was OK to even touch Lamya’s hair at all is beyond me.

Tiana Parker also seven from Tulsa, Oklahoma, was told that her dreadlocks were not acceptable at her school. Her parents, eventually switched her to another school.

Twelve year old, Vanessa VanDyke from Orlando, Florida, was threatened to be expelled from school, if she did not cut or shape her hair. The school seemed to change their mind once, the press got involved.

My point is, this has happened too many times and I think it’s horrible that any of these girls had to go through this. You cannot tell me that these experiences have not done a number on their self-esteems. It is a blessing that all of them have supportive parents that helped them through this discrimination.

We need to embrace and love each other for who we are, especially when thinking about our children. That is my Christmas Hair Wish … What are yours?

Living Relaxer-Free

Tap, Tap Tap … If you ever had a relaxer, you should remember those days approaching your touch-up, when your scalp was super itchy, but you couldn’t scratch it. I was reminded of this, one morning while driving to work. I was driving behind a woman, who was briskly tapping her head with her hand. It was quite a sight. The funny thing about it is that I knew exactly what she was doing. Her scalp was really itchy, but she didn’t want to scratch it, because she was probably going to get her touch-up done that day and knew the relaxer would irritate her scalp, especially if she scratched it. I’m sure others who seen her, thought she was crazy…LOL!

I cannot tell you how much I do not miss those days. Even though as of late, I have been recovering from my dermatitis and haven’t had a lot of time for my hair, I wanted to do a post about WHY I LOVE MY CURLS. Seeing that lady really got me to thinking about how blessed I am to have my curls and why I made the decision to go natural.

Here are a few reasons to love your CURLS or NATURAL TRESS:

·         No more relaxers and scalp burns

·         No need to run from the rain

·         Save money, unless you are a product junkie J

·         Curls have personality

·         Style versatility

·         Can wrap up the blow dryer and flat iron

·         Harsh chemicals can be thrown out

MOST IMPORTANTLY CURLS
ALLOW YOU TO BE YOU!
What do you love most about being curlie?

A Pledge to Health

So I have decided to come out of my fitness hiatus. I should say that I do have a gym membership and I’m not afraid of the gym, my motivation is what sometimes gets in the way of me actually reaching my personal goals. My goals are like many of yours out there, to lose about 10 pounds or so and tighten up in those areas that make your skinny jeans look sexier and let me not forget the return of the bikini body. Which means lots of cardio, weight training and my dear favourite crunches and sit-ups.

So part of the reason for this post is selfish. I know if I put myself on blast out here on the WORLD WIDE WEB, I will make a better effort to stay on track.

The other reason is that through a little research I’ve found out that exercising, drinking lots of water, eating properly and taking a multivitamin are not only good for your health and longevity, but it’s also good for your HAIR. What a concept! When you think of it, it makes so much sense right.

So here is my plan of action:

Go to the gym at least three times a week, maybe four if I’m lucky and can hang.

Eat a healthy balanced diet, which includes three days of the week meat-free (not including fish and seafood). Hey I’m from the East Coast, I can’t give up my fish and seafood, so don’t ask me to.

Lastly drink plenty of water and take a multivitamin. I’m taking the vitamin to leave nothing to chance. I want to make sure I’m getting all the nutrients I need. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

I know many people may decide to wait to get back on track after the holidays, but I prefer to get rid of any access I have beforehand so I won’t feel as guilt about eating a little bit of stuffing, gravy and having a glass of wine. Then continuing my workouts afterward the season of joy, love and eating, won’t be such a chore. This is just my personal philosophy. What is yours?

Is there anyone out there sweating it out at the gym? What are you doing that works for you? Do you have any tips for those of us with motivation issues or need help getting started?

Blessings and Curls,
B-Curlie
